Wednesday September 3rd 2008: Paddling and walking at the beautiful island Vaeroy.
Only one car on the ferryboat to Vaeroy.
a Very early morning start to get on the boat at 4.00 a.m. to Vaeroy.
I did make my breakfast and lunches on the boat. Beside myself there were only 2 other
passengers on board!
A beautiful sunrise over the sea at the island Vaeroy.
The map of the island Vaeroy.
After arriving at Vaeroy (point 8) I went directly to the East coast to see a beautiful sunrise.
It was nice weather and I started with kayaking on the North beach (point 1).
The wind was increasing when I was at point 2.
I wanted to paddle around the west coast, were I could see many birds. But the waves were getting white
breakers on the top. It was a good decision to carry over from point 2 to point 3 (a 250 meters
walk), here I could paddle in a more wind protected area. Due to the carry over I could spend more time on the beautiful
sand beach at point 4. See the pictures. I have seen many beaches in Norway, but this beach is in my eyes the most
beautiful one, what a place!!
The carry over point (3) with a small beach, mountain Haen at the background.
The steep side of mountain Haen (point 4), with the beautiful sand beach at the south coast.
The mountain Haen is 438m. high.
The sand beach is surrounded by steep rock, what a place!!
a Huge cave on the same sand beach.
View from inside the cave.
The wind was more increasing. I knew that , after I passed point 5, I should have to "fight" against a strong
North-East wind. Although I should have some protection from the island it was sometimes very hard working.
Those blast of wind came back again (just like the first day of this trip). The time between those blast of wind
(the wind was making the sea totally flat then) I tried to make as much speed as possible. During those blast of wind my speed
was reduced to zero. But finally I reached point 6 were I left my kayak and started to walk back to my car. I took the shortest way,
walked over mountain Hornet, where it was quit windy!!
The steep mountain Nuphetta (about 250 meters a.s.l.) with 2 big caves (point 5).
View towards Lofoten from mountaintop Hornet, 346 meters a.s.l. (point 7).
View to the North side of Vaeroy from mountain Hornet.
View over the village Vaeroy from mountain Hornet.
When I reached my car I picked up my kayak and got on the ferry boat to Bodo. The ferry boat was also fighting against the waves on the open sea
to Bodo. Some people were getting sea sick on the ferry boat.
I made a good decision this day to carry over from point 2 to point 3. What a wind and waves now, a good time to leave Lofoten.
But it has been a great 10 days trip. I am looking forwards to get back here in wintertime. The beach at Vaeroy wil be one of the places which I will visited then,
I wonder what the view will be here at wintertime.
