Tuesday 26th August 2008: 2nd day of the trip. Paddling along the West coast.
Sand beach at point 5.
In the morning there was some sunshine but, due to the steep mountains behind me,
the sun didn't reach my tent.
I did placed my tent high enough on the sand, I saw in the sand that the longest
wave stopped 9 meters before my tent!!
I packed my sea-kayak again, almost everything in waterproof bags.
Campplace at point 5 with sun on the high mountains in the morning .
Ready to go. Waiting for the right waves and then quick action: bring my kayak from the sand
in some deeper water, get in the kayak, close the spraydeck and paddle through the breakers
before one of those breakers bring you back to the sandy beach.
The sun is gone but, comparing to Spitsbergen where I was the last weeks, the air temperature
(about 13 C) and the sea water is still warm.
I paddled beside 3 caves at sealevel, but they were to small and the sea water was to rough to
padlle inside those caves. I spotted several seals, one seal was 2 meter from my kayak.
I was hoping to find more sandbeaches (good places to go ashore) but between point 5 and point 6
it was a rocky coastline, no sandbeaches.
Almost all my equipment is packed in waterproof bags.
After 14 km paddling without a brake a reached Hermanssdalen (point 6). Here was a mountainlake close
to the sea (drinking water), a good place to stop. Waiting for the right (small) breaker who should
take me to the rocky coastline. Yes this is the one: Paddle hard to stay on the top of the wave,
when the wave break make a low brace with the paddle on the wave (kayak is now in line with the
breaking wave), Hold the low brace on the wave until the wave place the kayak gentle on the rocks.
open the spraydeck, get out of the kayak and bring the kayak higher on the rocks before the higher
breaking waves reaches the coastline.
Campplace in Hermannsdalen, point 6.
This was exactly how it went. I saw that the clouds were around some mountaintops now and that the
higher clouds are getting darker. I placed my tent on a nice viewpoint on a grass hill and after I
walked to the lake to get drinking water it started to rain.
